Risk, safety and paper-trading tools for trading bots and AI agents (2026)
⚠ Risk note. No guardrail makes a strategy profitable. These tools reduce the damage from bugs, prompt injection and runaway agents; they don't remove market risk. Test every limit in paper trading by forcing it to trigger. Not financial advice.

A safe setup in five steps
- Paper trade on the same API you'll use live.
- Use trade-only API keys with no withdrawals, IP-whitelisted, in a sub-account.
- Put a policy layer between the agent and the order tool: size caps, symbol allowlist, daily loss limit.
- Keep a human confirm step for live orders until the logs look boring.
- Have a kill switch you have actually tested.

FAQ
What is a trading kill switch?
A control that stops new orders and, optionally, cancels open ones when a limit is hit: a daily loss, a drawdown, an order-rate spike or a manual trigger. PolicyGate Capital implements one as a pre-trade policy layer; many broker MCPs offer read-only or confirm-first modes as a softer version.
How should I test an AI trading agent?
Paper trading first with the same API as live (Alpaca paper, IBKR paper, Kalshi demo), then a small live sub-account with trade-only keys and no withdrawal permission.
Do LLM guardrails stop bad trades?
They can block malformed or out-of-policy tool calls (wrong symbol, size above a cap, tool not allowed), which is where many agent failures happen. They don't judge whether a trade is good.
