Is Bitvavo safe to connect?
Exchange ยท Centralized EUR spot exchange. Checked 2026-10-25; every line links its source.
Worst case: Bitvavo holds your coins, some assets are trade-only and can never be withdrawn on-chain, and a leaked API key with Withdraw permission can send funds out with no 2FA or email check.
Safe setup in 3 steps
- Give bot keys View and Trade only; Bitvavo API withdrawals skip 2FA and email confirmation
- Set an IP whitelist on every API key
- Check whether an asset is 'trade-only' before buying it if you plan to move it to your own wallet
What it can do with your money
| Who holds the keys | The exchange holds your funds Custodial exchange run by Bitvavo B.V. (Amsterdam), MiCA-licensed by the Dutch AFM. source |
|---|---|
| Can funds be sent out to any address? | Yes. Crypto can be withdrawn to external wallets, but Bitvavo has 'trade-only' assets that cannot be sent to an external wallet and can only be sold for euros. source |
| Can it hold or freeze your funds? | Bitvavo blocks crypto withdrawals for 24 hours after an email, password, 2FA or phone-number change; this cannot be lifted manually. Other withdrawal restrictions for 'security reasons' require a support review with no stated duration. Accounts are blocked for e.g. duplicate accounts, under-18 users, PayPal deposits without a verified IBAN, or an expired residence permit used for ID; extra verification 'may take a few business days'. Funds in a blocked account can be withdrawn to your verified bank account. source |
| What a leaked API key can do | Permissions per key: View, Trade and Withdraw. Withdrawals made with the API do not require 2FA or e-mail confirmation. IP whitelisting is optional but 'highly recommended': without it anyone holding the keys can act on the account. Expiry is not mentioned. source |
