Is Rainbow Wallet safe to connect?
Self-custody wallet · Ethereum, EVM networks. Checked 2026-10-29; every line links its source.
Worst case: Rainbow is self-custody and can't recover your wallet. If you lose your secret phrase without a backup, the funds are gone. If someone gets the phrase (a fake app, a fake 'claim RNBW' site, or a hacked iCloud or Google Drive account holding the cloud backup), they can drain the wallet. A malicious signature you approve can also pull your tokens. Nobody can reverse any of these.
Safe setup in 3 steps
- Install only from the links on rainbow.me: Chrome Web Store ID opfgelmcmbiajamepnmloijbpoleiama, the Firefox add-on 'rainbow-extension', App Store id1457119021, Google Play me.rainbow. Rainbow will never ask for your secret phrase, and its only support channels are support@rainbow.me and @rainbowdotme on X.
- Back up the secret phrase by hand and store it separately. If you also use the iCloud or Google Drive backup, lock that cloud account with a strong password and 2FA. Ignore token 'claim' sites that are not on rainbow.me.
- Read the transaction preview and scam warnings before every signature, and keep only bot or trading money in Rainbow. Long-term holdings belong on a hardware wallet, which Rainbow supports.
What it can do with your money
| Who holds the keys | You hold the keys Self-custody: the terms describe 'an unhosted and non-custodial wallet' and say 'Rainbow Studio does not maintain control over your Rainbow Wallet, cryptocurrencies or private keys.' Keys are generated on your device (https://rainbow.me/support/app/get-started-with-the-rainbow-app). Rainbow cannot recover a lost or compromised wallet (https://rainbow.me/support/app/the-importance-of-backups). source |
|---|---|
| Can funds be sent out to any address? | Yes. You sign every send yourself. The terms say 'Rainbow Studio will never have access to this recovery phrase, so we cannot move funds on your behalf.' The wallet uses an open, portable standard, so you can import it into another app (https://rainbow.me/support/app/get-started-with-the-rainbow-app). source |
| Swaps and third parties | Rainbow can't freeze funds on-chain, but its terms (Section 8.1) say it may 'block your wallet address without notice' if it links the address to a Prohibited Use. It may also 'monitor, review, retain and/or disclose any information' for sanctions programs and legal requests. Section 8.2 lets it suspend or restrict access to its services over a subpoena or court order, suspected Prohibited Use, or pending litigation. Swaps use a decentralized exchange and fiat purchases go through third-party processors (Sections 2.3 and 1.4). Terms updated 2023-12-13. source |

| What it can see | Rainbow says it never has access to your private keys, and its terms say it can't move your funds. Rainbow says it doesn't require your email or name. Its privacy policy dates from May 2020: it names no analytics providers, doesn't mention wallet addresses, and says third-party services 'may collect information used to identify you.' The terms say Rainbow may block a wallet address and may retain or disclose information for sanctions and legal requests. Transaction previews and scam warnings run on Blockaid's simulation API, so Blockaid sees the transactions you're asked to sign.
