Best paper trading and guardrails for AI trading agents (2026)

Picked on safety, documentation and honest costs, not payouts. Last checked 2026-10-17.

⚠ Risk note. No guardrail makes a strategy profitable. These tools reduce the damage from bugs, prompt injection and runaway agents; they don't remove market risk. Test every limit in paper trading by forcing it to trigger. Not financial advice.

Our picks

Best paper trading API: Alpaca Paper Trading

Free, available globally, and the same API as live with separate keys, so switching is one URL and one key.

Best for IBKR users: IBKR Paper Trading Account

$1M simulated buying power and works with TWS API and IBKR's MCP. Needs an approved live account.

Best kill switch: PolicyGate Capital

ALLOW, DENY or MODIFY on every order, with daily-loss limits and a drawdown kill switch. Community project, so review the code.

Best tool-call policy layer: Invariant Guardrails

Rules on agent and MCP tool calls, e.g. block the order tool unless size and symbol checks pass.

Best general LLM guardrails: NeMo Guardrails

NVIDIA's Apache-2.0 toolkit for input, output and tool-call rails.

FAQ

What is a trading kill switch?

A control that stops new orders and, optionally, cancels open ones when a limit is hit: a daily loss, a drawdown, an order-rate spike or a manual trigger. PolicyGate Capital implements one as a pre-trade policy layer; many broker MCPs offer read-only or confirm-first modes as a softer version.

How should I test an AI trading agent?

Paper trading first with the same API as live (Alpaca paper, IBKR paper, Kalshi demo), then a small live sub-account with trade-only keys and no withdrawal permission.

Do LLM guardrails stop bad trades?

They can block malformed or out-of-policy tool calls (wrong symbol, size above a cap, tool not allowed), which is where many agent failures happen. They don't judge whether a trade is good.
