Is Monero GUI / CLI (official) safe to connect?
Privacy wallet ยท Monero. Checked 2026-10-24; every line links its source.
Worst case: The keys sit in a wallet file on your computer, so a fake or trojaned download, malware on the PC, or a leaked 25-word seed can empty the wallet. The official site itself served infected binaries for a short time in 2019.
Safe setup in 3 steps
- Download only from getmonero.org or downloads.getmonero.org (or build from github.com/monero-project), never from ads, forks or links in chat.
- Check the file's SHA256 against the GPG-signed getmonero.org/downloads/hashes.txt, and verify that signature with the official guides before running anything.
- Write the 25-word seed on paper offline, run your own node or a node you trust, and stay on the latest release (0.18.5.4 as of 2026-10-16).
